EDUCATIONAL THERAPY

Educational therapy involves one-to-one, individualized intervention with clients who have learning challenges, whether or not there is an official diagnosis of a learning disability. Treatment is designed to remediate learning difficulties and develop strategies using a client’s strengths to compensate for those difficulties.

Educational therapy is a process through which the educational therapist explains to clients, in clear and appropriate terms, the nature of their learning difficulties and helps the client to understand their own learning style and strengths. Through better understanding of their unique learning profile, the client learns to use areas of strength to compensate for areas of weakness as well as to develop areas of particular strength more fully.

It is through the approach to working on underlying areas of vulnerabilities that educational therapy is distinct from tutoring. While tutors typically work with textbooks, content, and assignments related to a specific subject, educational therapists focus on strategies to support challenges an individual may have which interfere with the individual being able to fully access and engage with the content in the classroom.

Educational therapists create and implement an individualized treatment plan, using information from various sources including school, home, and other professionals with whom the client is working. Consideration is given to the whole person, taking into account social, emotional, psychoeducational, and neuropsychological context.

Those who struggle with math each have unique areas in which they are challenged. For some, it might be numeracy, for others it might be abstract reasoning, and for still others, it might be putting it all together.

Drawing on my training in Touch Math, On Cloud Nine / Lindamood-Bell, and others, as well as two decades of working with a variety of individuals struggling with math, I have been able to support many clients and help them more clearly understand mathematical concepts

While many individuals experience struggling to read, no two individuals experience that stuggle in the same way. With this in mind, I tailor my approach for each client, whether it is a young student just learning to read, a high school student struggling with comprehension, or an adult who simply wants reading to be easier.

My training in a variety of methods includes Lindamood Bell, S.P.I.R.E. ®, Wilson, and others. I understand that there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all method that works for everyone. Combining my training, knowledge, and experience from two decades of working with a range of students struggling to read, I tailor intervention to each client’s unique learning profile and help them improve their reading and possibly even enjoy it for the first time!

Individuals who struggle with writing may have difficulty with the physical act of writing, generating ideas, initiating the process, or organization. It’s also possible to struggle in multiple areas of writing at once.

Regardless of the area(s) in which an individual struggles with writing, I am able to employ my years of knowledge and training to support and improve the writing experience.
